Meet our founder

In 2009, a spark ignited in the heart of Anna Hartwell during a mesmerizing performance of Giselle at a local theater in Vancouver, British Columbia. The beauty of the dancers gliding across the stage, the ethereal costumes, and the emotional storytelling stirred something deep within her. This performance rekindled Anna’s lifelong passion for ballet, a love that had been nurtured by her mother since childhood.

Growing up in Vancouver, Anna spent her formative years immersed in the world of dance. Her mother, a former ballet dancer herself, would take Anna to classes and performances, encouraging her to explore the artistry of movement. Together, they would spend hours in the studio, where Anna learned not just the steps, but the grace and discipline that ballet demanded. Those moments created a bond that shaped Anna’s identity and aspirations.

Inspired by the elegance of Giselle, Anna envisioned a clothing brand that would honor her mother’s legacy and provide dancers with beautiful, high-quality ballet costumes. Drawing upon her education at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, where she had honed her skills in clothing design, she began sketching ideas for her new venture.

In the summer of 2009, Anna launched Volare, a ballet clothing brand dedicated to celebrating the art of dance. The name, which means “to fly” in Italian, perfectly encapsulated her vision: to create garments that allowed dancers to move freely and express their artistry. Each piece was designed with meticulous attention to detail, combining classic ballet aesthetics with modern flair. Anna focused on creating leotards, tutus, and accessories that not only looked stunning but also empowered dancers to perform at their best.

From the very beginning, Volare stood out for its commitment to quality and style. Anna sourced sustainable materials, ensuring that her garments were not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. She collaborated with local artisans to produce her pieces, fostering a sense of community and support within the Vancouver arts scene.

As word of Volare spread, Anna’s designs caught the attention of local dance schools and ballet companies. Dancers appreciated the thoughtful design and the way each piece made them feel both elegant and confident. With each collection, Anna continued to draw inspiration from classic ballets, infusing her designs with stories of passion, love, and perseverance.
